Lyrics Born is a celebrated rapper, songwriter, and performer known for his vibrant style, sharp lyricism, and deep roots in independent hip-hop. Born Tom Shimura in Tokyo and raised in Berkeley, he became a defining voice in the Bay Area’s alternative hip-hop movement, blending funk, soul, and classic rap influences into a sound that is uniquely his own. He first gained recognition in the 1990s as one half of the duo Latyrx, alongside Lateef the Truthspeaker. The group’s inventive approach to rhyme structures and storytelling helped push the boundaries of underground hip-hop and earned them lasting respect within the culture.
As a solo artist, Lyrics Born built a devoted following through energetic releases and unforgettable live performances.
