Del the Funky Homosapien
- His voice reached global audiences through collaborations with the virtual band Gorillaz
Del the Funky Homosapien—born Teren Delvon Jones—is one of hip-hop’s most imaginative lyricists, celebrated for his inventive wordplay, futuristic concepts, and fiercely independent spirit. Emerging from the Bay Area in the early 1990s, Del quickly distinguished himself with a style that blended humor, science fiction, and sharp social commentary.
Raised in Oakland and famously the cousin of Ice Cube, Del first stepped into the spotlight with his debut album I Wish My Brother George Was Here. While the record showcased his playful personality and clever lyricism, his later work would solidify his reputation as a visionary in underground hip-hop. Del became a key member of the influential collective Hieroglyphics, helping build a fiercely independent movement that prioritized creativity, lyricism, and artistic freedom. His voice also reached global audiences through collaborations with the virtual band Gorillaz, most famously on the hit single Clint Eastwood. One of his most acclaimed projects is the futuristic hip-hop group Deltron 3030, where Del performs as the time-traveling hero Deltron Zero.
Alongside producer Dan the Automator and turntablist Kid Koala, the group created the cult classic album Deltron 3030—a sci-fi hip-hop epic set in a dystopian future where technology, corporations, and rebellion collide. The project became a landmark for conceptual rap, showcasing Del’s ability to build entire worlds through rhyme. With decades of boundary-pushing music behind him, Del the Funky Homosapien remains a cult legend—an artist who treats hip-hop as a canvas for imagination, intelligence, and fearless originality
